Character: Mihael Keehl aka “Mello”

Age: 21

Series: Death Note

Personality: He comes off as mean, irrational, and emotional. He usually reacts before thinking things straight, especially if Near says something to piss him off. But he is actually very intelligent. When he sets a goal in mind, he will use any means necessary to meet that goal, even if it is illegal. He also loves to eat chocolate bars.

Brief Character History: CONTAINS SPOILERS! BE WARNED!

Mello lived in an orphanage in England known as the Wammy’s House, which held some of the brightest and most gifted children. Mello was so smart that he was considered a possible candidate to succeed L, the greatest detective in the world. However, there was one other child who always did better than him—a quiet kid named Near. Mello and Near did not get along at all, mostly from Mello’s end. Mello had always strived to be #1 and get the spot as L’s successor.

Then came the dreaded news of L’s death. Mello and Near were called in together and Mello did not take the news well at all, screaming about how L could have possibly lost to Kira. Near, meanwhile, remained calm the entire time while working on a puzzle, saying “If we don’t win the game—if we don’t solve the puzzle—we’re nothing more than failues.” L never named which of the two would be his successor before he died, and it was suggested that both Mello and Near work together. Near agreed…Mello, of course, did not. It was here that he said his good-bye to the orphanage; “Near will be the one to succeed L. Unlike me, he’ll do the job calmly, without emotion, like he was solving a puzzle. I’m leaving! Do whatever you want. I’ll be 15 in no time. I’ll live out my own way!”

After the 4-5 year time jump, we see Mello grown up and in L.A. He is associated with a gang and has continued to investigate Kira on his own. He kidnaps the Japanese Chief of Police and Yagami Light’s younger sister, Sayu, in order to obtain information on the Death Note. His reason: “I don’t care what method I use in order to get it before Near does.” And so the rivalry lives on. Mello holds Sayu for ransom in exchange for the Death Note, which he gets a hold of. After Sayu is released, Light and his team decide to take back the Death Note by force. They infiltrate the base where Mello is at. However, not everything goes according to his plan. While they were successful in obtaining the Death Note once again, Mello’s gang is taken out and Light’s father dies from gunshot wounds. Light’s dad had the opportunity to kill Mello via Death Note, but chose not to do so. Mello, meanwhile, set off an explosion and for some time, he was presumed dead, until he appears before Near.

This time, Mello’s face is scarred from the explosion. Near comments about how he could not have gotten this far had it not been for Mello’s actions. Mello reacts by pointing a gun at him and saying, “I am not your tool to solve a puzzle.” He then asks Near for a photo of himself back, which Near says has not been copied in any way and that there’s a great chance now that Mello will not be killed by the notebook. In exchange, he tells Near the rules of the Death Note as well as the existence of fake rules that were written in it to stump them. Mello also gets gets Mogi, one of Light’s teammates, to meet with Near. Using this information, Mello eventually concludes that Yagami Light is Kira—just as L concluded.

Mello continued to investigate by spying on Amane Misa and the Japanese Police, with his friend Matt helping him. During this time, Yagami Light had given the Death Note to Teru Mikami to write the names in the Death Note as per his instructions (since he was too busy to do it himself, let alone it wasn’t safe for him to do it without the risk of getting caught himself). Light then went to Kiyomi Takada, a news reporter who in turn would tell Mikami what Light instructed of him. Mello at one point kidnaps Takada, severing the connection. Mikami reacted by using the Death Note to kill Takada. Unfortunately, before Takada died, she was given a piece of the Death Note from Light prior to this event, and used it to write down Mello’s real name: Mihael Keehl. As such, Mello died of a heart attack. It was thanks to Mello’s sacrifice that Near was able to piece everything together and finally bring Yagami Light—Kira—to justice.
